Super easy and open everyday. Can cross on both sides with Italian passport. The officer is kind and easy going. Done everything in a matter of minutes. Once you cross to Nepal, you can catch buses to anywhere right after the border.

To the leadership of the Indian Army -- with respect and urgency,
We, the people of India, hold the Indian Army in the highest esteem. We respect your sacrifices and the role you play in protecting the nation. That makes it all the more painful to report an incident of unprofessional, humiliating conduct by personnel on duty at the Banbasa border crossing while we were travelling to Nepal.
On our way to Nepal we waited in line for inspection. We presented our identity cards, bike RC and driving licence as requested. After about fifteen minutes we were directed for bag checking. During the search I had cameras and lenses in my bag. One officer stopped me and -- without explanation or proper procedure -- began demanding bills for the equipment and grilling me with baseless assertions: that no gadgets are permitted into Nepal, that only 25,000 worth of equipment may be carried, and other arbitrary claims that made no sense. He detained me at immigration for fifteen minutes.
A short distance later, Nepali Army personnel stopped us. Their approach could not have been more different: polite, professional, clear in their questions and helpful in guiding us. We explored Nepal, returned, and were stopped again by Indian Army personnel. After routine checks we were again interrogated about the cameras. One officer asked me to meet his senior, and that senior interrogated us rudely -- including an officer who addressed my female friend in an insulting and humiliating manner, asking in Hindi, "kahi aap ladki bhaga ke ni le jare ho kahi?" (Are you kidnapping this girl?). He then pressured her to accompany him to his office alone. Only after we firmly refused were we allowed to leave.
This behaviour -- repeated, rude, discriminatory, and time-wasting -- is unacceptable. It undermines public trust, demeans citizens who respect and support the Armed Forces, and is particularly disgraceful when it targets or intimidates women. Civilians obey the law, pay taxes, and cooperate with security procedures. In return we deserve professionalism, dignity, and adherence to clear standard operating procedures.
We request, respectfully but firmly, that the Army leadership:
* Investigate this incident and hold accountable any personnel who acted beyond protocol or abused their authority.
* Re-emphasise and enforce standard operating procedures at public-facing checkpoints so checks are consistent, lawful, and respectful.
* Provide mandatory training in public conduct, civilian interaction and gender sensitivity for personnel deployed at border crossings and public checkpoints.
* Publish clear, visible guidance at checkpoints about what is permitted, the process for checks, and the rights of civilians during inspections.
We remain grateful to the Indian Army for its service. That gratitude compels us to ask for better conduct from those who represent the institution in public. Civilians and soldiers both serve the nation -- mutual respect must be non-negotiable.
Jai Hind.
Jai Bharat.
Jai Nepal.

As of March and April 2025 I had no issues crossing the border either way.
If you have an e-visa, you will not be able to cross into India at any land border if it is your first time entering.
Make sure you have un damaged / clean USD, pounds, or euros for the Nepali visa on arrival.
The tuk tuk drivers on the Indian side try to shake you down for more money. Should be around 50 for shared tuk tuk or around 300 for one to yourself for the whole crossing.

Leaving India to Nepal was very easy at this border. People were really friendly. I didn't ask if leaving Nepal to India is still not possible.

Indian border is closed for foreigners. Traveled all the way from Pokhara to turn around and drive to Sonauli border (500km). No information, nobody tells on arrival that you cannot pass from Nepal to India. Very disappointed
